Pastors' Panel: Christ & Culture
Morrison Room (A106), Corson-Mudd Hall
In 1951 H. Richard Niebuhr published his seminal work Christ and Culture. Niebuhr, who taught Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School for 30 years, maps a 5-part typology of how Christians have historically related their faith traditions to culture. All conversations about Christianity and culture in the last half century have taken place in light of the categories Niebuhr described. Even the New York Times called the book "a superb piece of analytical writing."
Following publication of the 50th anniversary edition of this classic work, we have invited invited three local pastors representing three different traditions--Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed--to reflect on how their faith traditions continue to relate to culture in light of Niebuhr's framework.
